Florida Delays New Building Code

On December 17, 2001, Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed a bill to delay implementation of the new Florida Building Code. The code will now take effect on March 1, 2002, instead of January 1.
The new code would have had an important impact on the hurricane protection industry by defining the state’s wind-borne debris regions and high velocity hurricane zone, addressing a statewide system for product evaluation and approval and establishing fees.
Some in the hurricane protection industry feel the delay was a major setback, indicating how politicized the new building code had become. The new code was heavily lobbied by building and trade associations.
The International Hurricane Protection Association (IHPA), Miami, FL, has called for a board meeting after the first of the new year to discuss its plans in light of the delay.

Hurricane Protection Info on Web

Dealers and installers in the hurricane protection industry can find lots of information about products, industry-related events and trade associations by visiting Web sites.
The International Hurricane Protection Association’s (IHPA) Web site (www.inthpa.com) provides details about the association, its board of directors, code of ethics and benefits. Those interested can download an IHPA membership application as well.
The site also includes information about the hurricane protection industry’s trade show, The World of Hurricane Protection (see page 9); a help wanted board; and approved hurricane protection products.
The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) launched its Web site late last year (www.disastersafety.org) providing hurricane safety information.
The site, which is intended for residents in threatened areas, includes materials in both English and Spanish on how to make new and existing homes more resistant to hurricane damage; information to help small business owners identify risk and put a disaster safety plan into action; and links to other important natural disaster safety sites.
IBHS is a national non-profit initiative of the insurance industry based in Tampa, FL. The mission of the research and communications organization is to reduce deaths, injuries, property damage, economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.
