HURRICANE SIMULATOR DEMONSTRATION VIDEO ADDED TO AAMA WEB SITE

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Schaumburg, IL, has added live video showing the real-world effects of hurricane force winds and wind-driven rain to its Web site. The free download is available at www.aamanet.org/news.asp.

As the fenestration industry’s source of performance standards, product certification and educational programs, AAMA called on the University of Florida to demonstrate the world’s largest portable hurricane wind and rain simulator at the association’s National Fall Conference in October.

The simulator—calibrated to recreate actual recorded wind-driven rain scenarios—provides a realistic evaluation of building products and test methods intended for hurricane-prone regions. The apparatus is mounted on a trailer and composed of eight 5-foot-high industrial fans powered by four marine engines that collectively produce 2,800 horsepower. Architectural Testing, Inc. provided the building mock-ups for the demo, which the simulator blasted with winds of up to 130 mph—Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale—and high-pressure water jets that mimic torrential wind-driven rain of up to 35-inches/hour.

Although most residential and light commercial properties that are built in compliance with current codes will physically withstand hurricane winds, water intrusion through windows, doors and walls remains an issue, states AAMA. When rain penetrates these exterior building products and their assemblies, it often causes significant interior damage, occupant displacement, business interruption and extensive restoration expenses.

“The information gathered will help us ensure performance of the windows, doors and wall assemblies under real-world hurricane conditions, and ultimately, protect more people and properties from costly damages,” said Rich Walker, AAMAs president and CEO.

“When this program first started, we brought the lab to the hurricane. Now, we’re bringing the hurricane back to the lab,” added Forrest Masters, assistant professor of civil and coastal engineering at the University of Florida.
ICC ELECTS DIRECTORS, OFFICERS

The International Code Council (ICC) elected its 2007-2008 board of directors and officers at the organization’s recent annual conference.

Members elected Steve Shapiro president of the ICC board. Shapiro is the director of codes compliance for Hampton, VA. He is a certified building official and has been involved in code enforcement for 29 years.

The new vice president is Adolf Zubia, fire chief for Las Cruces, NM. He is chairman of the Fire and Life Safety Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and immediate past president of the New Mexico Fire Chiefs Association.

Ron Lynn, building official and director of development services for Clark County, NV, was elected secretary/treasurer. He is chairman of the Nevada Organization of Building Officials and the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council.

Board members William Dupler, Barbara Koffron and Doug Murdock were reelected to serve three-year terms as directors.

ICC members also elected two new representatives to the board to serve three-year terms, Stephen Jones and Jeff Whitney. Jones is construction official for Millburn Township and the borough of Florham Park, NJ; and Whitney is chief building official for Grand County, UT.

“Our directors devote a lot of time and energy to volunteer for the International Code Council board,” said ICC CEO Rick Weiland. “They could not serve on the board without the support of the jurisdictions they work for. We thank the board members and their employers for their dedication to pursuing the goal of building safety and fire prevention.”
